The legislative intent (383.002) is to further the public purpose of developing and diversifying the economy of this state by providing incentives for the location and development of projects in certain counties to attract visitors and tourists. Projects are funded by a one half of one percent sales tax collected by retail establishments within the District. Since 2000, the District has used these revenues to fund many improvements throughout the district, including collaborating with the DCBE/ Acton VFD to build a fire station with helipad and the Opal Durant Acton Community Center which houses the HCDD offices and Acton Library. The District applied for and received from the National Parks Service a 74 acre tract of land now known as the Acton Nature Center of Hood County. The Rio Brazos Master Naturalists were invited to lend their expertise to restore the land to its original prairie condition. Under the direction of the MNs and funded by the District, volunteers have created a facility for the community that is an outdoor laboratory for exploring and learning for old and young alike.
